the Wonderbox totally boosted the compressed Sunface sound. Result lots of clarity, opened up the tone...
but wht was also cool was that the sustain was huge and pocketed (compression sounding)...No Mud,
no flappy, no flarting... I feel like i have achieved what my amp was designed to do, just need the wonderbox
to boost it into the tube-room it needed to growl, purr, and sing.
Keith, the pedal sounds great! Tried it alone on my RedIron amp (5w) (has 1 volume knob => at 9 oclock)...
whoa! Killer. totally opens up the amp (class A)--rolled back the volume on gitter(91' LesPAul Standard) and it
cleaned up very nice without a too much drop in volume. Tried vintage (v) setting versus modern (M) and the
difference is noticable! Seems dumb to state, but if you've ever toggled a switch and didn't notice a change
then you get where I'm coming from...I was using my smallcab (Mr Watts) from defunct EarCandy Cab's - it a
1x8 with their proprietary speaker (wish i'd got the greenback - long story, i digress)...Anyhoo the distortion and
overdrive is seriously sustaining, you can hear the waves getting folded and crushed! Sweet. The "V" position
does seem to breath more, chimey, open higher tonality to my ear. The M position offered more pop, crack on
the harmonics ---As I played i seemed to prefer this M setting...just my pref' --especially while riffing and
playing lead. The V sounds nice when rolled back and jazz chording etc. So My effects chain is simple. I don't
like to hide behind chorus, delay, echo, flange, etc. - did i state theREDIRON has one knob?---not a tweeker....
besides who has time to run back to their amp and move an EQ or tone knob? Again I digress...point is, just
play right? all the tone is, should be, from the guitar. Well, I do own an Analogman.com SUNFACE (texas instr
transistors - germanium). It is a little fickle (have to adjust it to jive with Temp etc). Anyway, that was the only
pedal i used -- again with it i could roll back Volume and Clean up nicely (can't do as easily with silicon)...SO,
I tried Wonderbox before SUnFAce Fuzz...very nice - i little flappy, mud crunch (it could be 'cause my Sunface
was cold)...I put Wonderbox AFTER the fuzz - -WOW! Mighty Sustain, I heard chimes, harmonics, upper-mids,
and clear tone without harshness or being brittle. there didn't seem to be coloration just Enhancement of what
was there.

I'm a simple guy, and not a performing musician, so I hate the thought of having a thousand different knobs and pedals at my feet. I've also tried multi effects units, and feel overwhelmed with all the choices, most of which are metal oriented, and subpar anyway. I then wind up spending more and more time trying to fiddle around with the endless combinations in pursuit of the elusive and illusionary “perfect tone.”
Genre-wise, I like blues, classic rock, and some older pop songs. I play a Stratocaster, but I like to maintain a decent low end, as I'm not a fan of thin single coil tone. I was recently in search of a simple boost pedal. I finally narrowed my six choices down to a couple of highly reviewed items. Both were ok, but I didn't feel they did enough to justify keeping them.
At this point, I happened to come upon an item on ebay called the “Wonderbox.” One thing that immediately stuck out, is that the seller offered a 14-day trial period, and a no questions asked refund - long as the pedal was returned in the condition it was received. This was a can't miss opportunity. I then contacted the seller/builder of the pedal, and asked many questions. Rather than getting short, undetailed responses which reaked of annoyance and impatience, I instead received very detailed responses. This was obviously a man who is passionate both about tone, and his product. After going back and forth with Keith a few times, I orded the Wonderbox and eagerly awaited its arrival.
I try not to jump to immediate conclusions about anything, initially. Whether its a guitar, effects pedal, or a new tooth brush, the dreaded placebo effect is a frequent companion of mine. After plugging in and doing a bunch of on/off comparisons, I could hear a clear difference when the pedal was engaged. In particular, I noticed a nice clean increase in the low end, which is exactly what I was looking for. The boost is largely transparent, but it adds just enough color to raunch things up a bit with the level lower than half. After that, things get wilder, and I say that in the best possible way. Again, I could plug into a bar of soap in the honeymoon phase, and would probably try to convince myself of a tonal improvement, so my initial observations meant very little.
As weeks have gone by, I've come to appreciate this pedal more when it's not engaged. You're probably thinking, what kind of testimonial is this? I'll explain. The first time I watched HD television, it looked crisp and amazing. The detail was an incredible improvement over what I was used to. As years have gone by, I am no longer conscious of the detail improvement, because HD is now the norm. The only way I can really appreciate it is to watch a standard channel, and compare the two; so it is with the Wonderbox.
I keep this boost engaged most all the time, so it's normal to take it for granted. When I turn it off, I'm still amazed at the difference. Prior to the WB, I felt my amp's tone going through a 1x12 was decent. Now it's only when I shut it off that I realize exactly how much of a dense fullness and roundness it adds. It makes my standard amp tone seem lifeless and dull, and despite some positive tonal contributions from the other boosts I've tried, I never had anything resembling the kind of epiphany the Wonderbox brought about.
If you're the kind of person who cherishes solid simplicity in favor of unfulfillable promises and slick marketing, you should definitely consider the Wonderbox. Keith calls the WB a “tonal enhancement device”, rather than simply a boost, and I couldn't agree with that term more, because that's exactly what it is. After one or two interactions with Keith, and you will realize that his passion and enthusiasm are genuine - a rarity in this commercially driven world we live in. Combine that with a great product, and you have yourself the Wonderbox.
